I have found that so many of my students get busy in their GCSE and A-Level years, and can no longer find the time to take weekly LAMDA coaching. Which is a shame, because often this is JUST as they’re about to start their Bronze, Silver or Gold Medal Syllabus Work, which gains students UCAS points (used to apply for University).
That’s why for the first time this year, I am organising a LAMDA Medal Summer Intensive Course!
Who is this course suitable for:
LAMDA Medal Exams are a big step up from the regular grades. They gain you UCAS points which are equivalent to A-levels. So in order to take the exam, hard work, determination and some self discipline will be required. But the course will also be really fun!
It’s very hard to put a minimum age on taking your first Medal exam. If I’ve never worked with you (and don’t know you), or you haven’t done any LAMDA grades before, as a general rule, people who are going into year 10 would be suitable to take their first Medal exam. There is a possibility that I think you’d be ready to take the Bronze level earlier, but it really depends on the individual students’ confidence & maturity. We can discuss this before the course starts.
I do not enter students for the Medal Grades under the age of 13.
This course is suitable for you if you
-
are 13+ years old (or will be by the time you take the exam)
-
have gained the maturity to tackle and understand the work and content of the required pieces
-
have taken LAMDA exams before, or even if you haven’t but would like to work on your confidence, public speaking/performance skills, empathy development, …
-
are motivated, keen to work hard with a small group of peers and take on this fun challenge!

How will the Course work:
LAMDA Medal Exams are a big step up from the regular grades. The course will be hard work and intensive (as the name already gave away). As Grade 8 is equivalent to an A-Level, an equivalent amount of time and effort will have to go into preparing for these Medal Exams. There will be a lot to do in the 5 day course (all fun!).

-
Upon enrolment to the course, we will organise a short 1-to-1 Zoom meeting to get to know each other, discuss what syllabus you’d like to work on (acting, verse & prose, public speaking or Shakespeare), and give you perhaps some work in preparation for the course.
-
On the first day of the Intensive week we will look for the right pieces for you and sort out all the material you need. We will also make the final decision as to what grade you’ll be working towards. You will receive all theory and knowledge material that you will need to know upon taking the exam. The decision as to what grade you will take, will be based on what will benefit you most in terms of confidence building, current skill level and what year you’re in at school.
-
Some of the coaching, training and technique development will be group work, quite a lot will be 1-to-1, and you will also definitely work with others in your group, giving and receiving feedback. Everyone in the course will be on their own individual trajectory and might be taking different exams and grades. That way you can learn from each other.
-
On the last day of the course, we will book the exam. This will ideally be around 7 weeks after the course (the deadline LAMDA sets), but can be longer if the student doesn’t feel ready.
-
In the 7 weeks after the course, you will need to continue developing your work and practising independently so you don’t forget.
-
We will organise two 1h 1-to-1 coaching sessions in the time between the course and the exam (included in the course price).
-
About 7 weeks after the course you take your exam.
What will we cover in the course:
-
Confidence building
-
Public speaking & conversation techniques
-
Acting analysis
-
Acting & movement techniques
-
Background of important theatre practitioners
-
Correct voice use and diction exercises
-
Research techniques for public speaking
-
Rhetorical devices for speech writing
-
Anything else you may need to be prepared for you exam!

How do UCAS points work?
A distinction in Grade 8 gains you 30 UCAS points, almost the equivalent of getting a C in an A-Level (32 UCAS points). So if you were to get a Distinction in Grade 8 Acting and in Grade 8 Verse & Prose, you’d have gathered 60 extra UCAS points when applying for University. If you then decide to also take a Grade in the Shakespeare syllabus, you’d get an extra 12 UCAS points on top!
